Tapestry Description

Departure for the Hunt

Medieval falconry tapestries

The Departure for the Hunt tapestry, sometimes called La Chasse tapestry, was originally woven in Brussels in the early 16th century: one of the Lord’s Life tapestries series. It shows a falconry party leaving for a hunt accompanied by a page with a castle in the background. This is now in the wonderful Cluny Museum in Paris, the world’s premier museum of medieval tapestries.

We greatly admire and enjoy this tapestry, aided by the memory that a different version of these medieval falconry tapestries was the first tapestry we sold back in the spring of 1994. Today it is superbly woven in Belgium in a thick yet tightly woven weave of 60% cotton, 32% wool and 8% polyester resulting in a rich full look with good detailing. It is fully lined, with a rod pocket – we enclose instructions for hanging tapestries with your order. Please note that the largest size is non-returnable.

Below is a rather fuzzy over-exposed image from one one of our customers in the south of France, but what a great setting!
