Tapestry Description

Great Wave off Kanagawa tapestry

La Vague d’Hokusai

The Great Wave off Kanagawa tapestry shows a famous Japanese print made in about 1830. It is also known as La Vague d’Hokusai or The Wave. The woodblock artist Hokusai cut this scene as the first of his famous series Thirty-Six Views of Mount Fuji. It shows an enormous wave towering over boats with Mount Fuji seen in the trough of the waves. Numerous museums have copies, including one in Claude Monet‘s house at Giverny where he collected over 200 Japanese engravings and other Japanese art.

Our tapestry is woven in France by Jules Pansu, in 72% cotton, 24% linen and 4% polyester. We appreciate the slightly raised relief given to certain elements of the design felt when you run your hand across it. It is lined, with a rod pocket – we supply instructions for hanging tapestries with your order.
