The Captive Unicorn
French unicorn tapestries
The Captive Unicorn tapestry is the last and best-known scene of the French unicorn tapestries. It is from the late 15th century series ‘The Hunt of the Unicorn’ often simply called the Unicorn Tapestries. They were possibly commissioned for the wedding of Louis XII of France and Anne of Brittany and are now in the Metropolitan Cloisters in New York. Its Milles Fleurs background has many plants with symbolic or medical attributes with the unicorn placed within a well-understood allegorical setting.
This is now woven in France in 80% cotton and 20% viscose. It is lined, with a rod pocket for easy hanging. This medieval tapestry is also available without the border.
Please note that the above image shows this size – the background being a dark blue.
